For 75 years, Buss Kneaders have excelled in the compounding of highly filled and shear-sensitive plastics, especially with stringent mixing requirements. Determination of the optimum process geometry has so far been based on experience or trials in the pilot plant. There have been few systematic studies that could serve as the basis for numerical models for computer-aided optimization.
Recently, a consortium of the IKT at the University of Stuttgart and the SKZ in Würzburg took the first steps toward efficiently predicting the mixing behavior of oscillating co-kneaders. Their systematic investigations of the process technology, both experimental and theoretical, are making a major contribution to clarifying the process engineering sequences in the BUSS Kneader.
